After sampling garments from about 30 textile houses this year, I've found two that meet my standards, and therefore hopefully your expectations of quality and price. Both in India, one goes beyond FAIR TRADE into the nurturing realm of community building by creating cooperatives in and around Mumbai. They loom complex ikat patterns and either hand paint or hand block batik onto organic fiber, 100% cotton. While everything they create is sensational, what won me over are their many reversible vests and jackets, and their attention to detailed embroidery and appliqué. With every purchase you are helping to support these impoverished communities—as they say, dignity, not charity. How sweet is that? The second new collection is special in its own way. It's a longtime family business that excels in scrumptious silks—mainly gossamer georgette and slithery charmeuse—some with embroidery and beadwork that's both classic AND trendy. Solids, dip dyes, and intricate shibori knotting techniques come together to create truly global garments. Of course, you'll find offerings from Tienda Ho's India collection as well!
